I’m Still Alive + Rocket Bits v0.4!

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

Look! I’m still alive! It’s been far too long since I’ve written a post or done an update on Rocket Bits… it’s surprisingly hard to find free time with a new baby and a full time job! But things have started to settle down a little and I’m able to start devoting more time to making games again!

Update #2 Submitted!

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Rocket Bits v0.3 ( update #2 ) has been submitted and should be released in a week or so depending on how long Apple takes to approve it!

I held off on adding the time / fuel limit to the game since there were mixed reactions to it. Thanks for speaking up and letting me know what you thought of that idea! I don’t ever want to implement something that no one will like! Maybe the game doesn’t need a finite ending like I initially thought… ideas?

Anyways, here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in this update:

New Features:
- Basic missions! More to come!
- Ability to scroll the mini-map.
- Added more information to the mini-map.
- Spaceman now has a jetpack! Much easier to control!
- New context sensitive action menu.
- Added bombs just for fun!
- First pass main menu.

Minor Tweaks and Bug Fixes:
- Tweaked map creation code to generate bigger maps.
- Fixed bug with mini-map not updating properly when blocks are destroyed.
- Cleaned up HUD buttons.
- Made map code buttons easier to press.

I hope you all enjoy the update! Have fun!

Update #2 In Progress

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

Hi guys!

I’ve begun work on Rocket Bits update #2! In this update I’d like to add the basic game framework for achieving goals / missions as well as ending the game ( among a bunch of other smaller tasks ).

Ideally this update will give us the ability to actually get scores for a playthrough and be able to post them to a leaderboard. My thought ( after all the great input from you guys ) is to give the player a time limit in which to get the highest score possible by gathering resources, upgrading your ship and space man, performing objectives and completing goals and missions. Each time you complete a goal or mission you’ll be awarded with a little bit more time. Someone mentioned Crazy Taxi a while back and I think it’s a great mechanic to add to the game. It allows for a definite ending to the game while giving the player a way to extend that time by progressing through the missions and playing well.

Initially I’ll add just a couple of different missions, goals, upgrades, etc. with the idea being that that once the framework and systems are in place, it’ll be really easy to add to them and expand so that we eventually get a TON of really fun things to do in the game.

On top of that, I’ll be trying to fix a few minor bugs and tweaking a few things here and there. Should be a big update that gets things moving much more in the direction of Rocket Bits becoming a real game and not simply a tech demo!

Thoughts?

New Baby!

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Hey guys!

Just a heads up that I might be a little delayed on the next Rocket Bits update as well as responding to your e-mails, comments and tweets… my wife and I just had our first baby so I’ve been more than a little side tracked of course :) We’re really happy and loving the new baby, but it obviously has been limiting my computer time, haha. Some great ideas keep coming in and I’m really excited to implement the next set of features!

Thanks for your patience Rocket Bitters! ( Should that be what we’re called? )
