Rocket Bits: Update #1 ( Night #1 )

Monday, December 5th, 2011

First full day of getting awesome feedback from everyone! I’m really excited that you guys all are sending me your ideas! It’s really fun to read them all and every single one sparks some new possibility, tweak or insight about the game… really, really cool!

I Spent a couple hours tonight and was able to implement a new dark and moody lighting scheme. The terrain is now only lit up when the ship is close to it as if there was a light on the ship illuminating everything within a small radius of it. It really makes it feel more fun to explore when it’s dark and you don’t know what’s ahead of you. However, that’s only fun for so long… so I also added the ability to place “beacons” in the world wherever you want. Beacons will light up an area just like the ship does; only they’re permanent. When I was playing around with it, I got in the habit of leaving the little beacons behind me as a sort of “light bulb bread crumb trail”. Pretty neat!

Tomorrow I’ll start working on the mechanic for getting out of the ship and exploring the planet on foot! That should be fun!

Thanks again for all the ideas, hopefully I’ll finish this first update by this weekend and submit it to the AppStore. So far, so good everyone!

Sounds pretty cool, but are you going to keep the beacons unlimited? I think it would kind of destroy the feeling of darkness and maybe lonelyness, helplessness, etc, if you could light everything.
It depends on which way you want the game to go, more “arcade-style” or more story-based.

    Keep up the good work!

    Yo Bryan,
You should name your updates after candies, going in Alphabetical order from A to Z, like your first update should be Rocket Bits Version Airheads. Or name them after G I Joe Characters going from A to Z, so it would be Rocket Bits Version Armbruster, Brad J. Or Ninja Turtle characters, Rocket Bits Version Ace Duck (

@Thomadin Not sure just yet about the unlimited time on the beacons. I guess we’ll just see how it goes and how people like it in this first update.

@Mike Great idea! Legal issues though?

Probably. I wasn’t thinking an official name but more of code names for each release like Android does for their operating system.

Anyways, I think when you get out of the Rocket you should have a little jetpack that can help you float around, but it needs time to recharge, meaning you can use it in burst. So its more to jump higher but not to jet every where without your Rocket ship, unless maybe you upgrade it. Also it could be used to slow your fall.

I don’t know if I’m allowed to offer suggestions here, so please tell me if I’m not.
I see a lot of potential with this game, and a lot of fun outlandish ideas like multiplayer ship racing or pvp arenas of sorts or maybe even a constantly growing online world that people form to their liking, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
As a first suggestion, I think customization options would be pretty cool. Like maybe different ship types or an in-game ability to customize your out-of-ship character, pixel-by-pixel, because I imagine the character wouldn’t be too large.
My other suggestion is bigger maps combined with random encounters, like a black hole that sends you to the beginning, or an alien encounter where they steal your ship and you have to build a new one.
These are just some cool ideas I had. I wish you good luck and I hope your game gains huge popularity. I’ll be looking forward to how this game turns out.

You’re absolutely allowed to offer suggestions! The more the better :)

Yea, I think customization options will be in an update soon as everyone seems to really want those. I think that even if it’s just a color change ability it’ll at least be fun to have your own little personal touch on the ship / world.

Quick question Bryan, what do you plan on doing with the little man? Like when you get out with the whole view change? I thought it would be sweet if you made it almost like 3rd person in Minecraft? Just a thought!

Great work this is going to the top of the charts I can see it!

Just a quick thought, the ship could be running on limited fuel, the main character has to leave the ship and manually mine/extract mineral ore to take back to the ship and refuel it.
So the aim is to escape the alien world.
Additionally the alien world could be imploding, so the player is against the clock.
If your tech allows it the world could change form, imagine a large cavern slowly collapsing in on itself, enforcing the player to navigate tight areas if they hang around too long, whether that be in ship form or on foot as the spaceman.
Maybe the game is similar to an endless runner and you just have to travel as far as you can for points on a leaderboard. Or it could be level based with set checkpoints.
Anyhow, I really like the whole concept of this user created game, I hope it goes well for you.

maybe this could be kinda like minecraft/Littlebigplanet where you build like a level and can make stuff. that’d be fun, then publish levels to online for others to play

I saw one review on itunes saying that the ship should transform into other vechiles. So maybe a tank to make blowing up rocks easier, or a boat(maybe water) or even something like sanat in a sleigh dropping presents behind him

Yea, a few others have been asking for better / different ways to drill and blow up rocks. I like the idea of different vehicles… thanks!
