Update #2 In Progress

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

Hi guys!

I’ve begun work on Rocket Bits update #2! In this update I’d like to add the basic game framework for achieving goals / missions as well as ending the game ( among a bunch of other smaller tasks ).

Ideally this update will give us the ability to actually get scores for a playthrough and be able to post them to a leaderboard. My thought ( after all the great input from you guys ) is to give the player a time limit in which to get the highest score possible by gathering resources, upgrading your ship and space man, performing objectives and completing goals and missions. Each time you complete a goal or mission you’ll be awarded with a little bit more time. Someone mentioned Crazy Taxi a while back and I think it’s a great mechanic to add to the game. It allows for a definite ending to the game while giving the player a way to extend that time by progressing through the missions and playing well.

Initially I’ll add just a couple of different missions, goals, upgrades, etc. with the idea being that that once the framework and systems are in place, it’ll be really easy to add to them and expand so that we eventually get a TON of really fun things to do in the game.

On top of that, I’ll be trying to fix a few minor bugs and tweaking a few things here and there. Should be a big update that gets things moving much more in the direction of Rocket Bits becoming a real game and not simply a tech demo!

Thoughts?

I don’t really like the idea of a time limit to the game, as I like exploring the game world and a time limit would probably just make me rush through everything to get a highscore.

But it’s your game though, you can do whatever you want with it.

What about a fuel limit instead of a time limit? The main thing I’m trying to accomplish with either of these is a definite end to the game where a score is calculated and can be sent to a leaderboard. Maybe there is another way to do this though without imposing time / fuel limits? Ideas?

maybe you could go through a little ‘portal’ were it then does a countdown and you complete your mission while being timed. then you could leave the ‘portal area’ and continue with your exploring stuff, like banging holes while trying to get out of the map, and collecting gold. I agree with the other people, exploring is my favorite part!

Also I would choose either one, the fuel limit or the time limit, whichever one is easier to read, although I kinda like the fuel limit by the sounds of it. Seems more ‘real’.

I like the portal idea. Maybe when you enter the portal you could have a time limit to get out before it closes, or just go with the fuel limit.

As Kaleb suggests perhaps there could be two seperate game modes, exploration and time limit?
Or maybe the player has to exit the world in the quickest time possible to obtain a score for the leaderboard? but they are also free to explore the world at their own leisure. I really like the idea of mining ore for fuel.

Sounds great, but I also would appreciate a fuel limit instead of a time limit…
